Meet the Coaches

Noelle Knight

As lead exercise physiologist at Duke Center for Living at Fearrington and PRN exercise specialist and group exercise instructor at Duke Health and Fitness Center in Durham, Noelle teaches 10 group exercise classes per week on land, cycle and in the pool.

Pierce Freelon

A director, musician, Emmy-Award winning producer and host of a PBS web-series, Pierce is also a North Carolina State Senator candidate. As the founder of Blackspace, he created a digital maker space where young people learn about music, film and coding. As a professor, he has taught music, political science, and African American studies at UNC and NCCU.

Carol Krucoff, C-IAYT, E-RYT

An IAYT-certified yoga therapist and an experienced registered yoga teacher, Carol has been practicing yoga for more than 40 years and studied yoga with master teachers from around the world.  She is also an award-winning health journalist and author of several books including, “Yoga Sparks:  108 Easy Practices for Stress Relief in a Minute or Less” and “Healing Yoga for Neck and Shoulder Pain.”

Gerri Houlihan

Gerri, a professional dancer and choreographer, studied at the Juilliard School. She has performed with prestigious dance companies, performing arts schools and universities both internationally and throughout the U.S. A longtime member of the American Dance Festival, Gerri currently teaches at ADF studios and as a guest artist at Elon University.

Bridget Pemberton-Smith

A founding board member of Art Therapy Institute, Bridget works with children with cancer, refugee and immigrant students and senior adults living in memory care facilities among others. With a Master’s of Expressive Arts Therapies, Bridget is also a Soul Collage Facilitator and offers workshops through the Art Therapy Institute.

Tom Spector

Internationally regarded as an effective meditation and healing teacher, Tom Spector has 40 years experience helping people resolve troubling issues while restoring self-esteem and inner peace. Combining profound meaning with light humor, his teachings are clear and easy to follow. Tom’s book and CD will be available at a discount.

Christine B. Tenekjian, MPH, RDN, LDN

Christine became a dietitian to teach people how to eat for a healthy and energized life. She works with clients for weight management, lipid modification, blood sugar and diabetes control, gastrointestinal issues, sports nutrition, sustainable eating and general wellness. She loves to empower and educate individuals and groups to create practical solutions for better eating in the context of their busy lives.

Jocelyn Weiss, PhD, MPH, NBC-HWC

Passionate about empowering others to achieve their optimal health and well-being, Jocelyn acts as a health coach and instructor at Duke Integrative Medicine, where she develops and delivers public and professional training programs including resiliency, mindfulness and behavior change.

Maggie McDowell

A 300-hour certified Baptiste Yoga Leader, Maggie teaches yoga as a registered children’s yoga teacher (RCYT). She is also a trainer for Yoga Ed., an organization providing yoga training and curriculum to schools. She’s the founder of Balanced Teachers, an online community for educators that prevents teacher burnout through self-awareness and self-care.

Cicely Mitchell, Ph.D.

Cicely is the CEO of So When Do I Clap? and co-founder of the Art of Cool Project, a 501(c)(3) jazz-presenting nonprofit organization in Durham. She is the artistic director of SummerStage at Golden Belt, an outdoor stage abutting Hi-Wire Brewery. Cicely maintains a passion for promoting progressive jazz and alternative soul music to a wide audience.

Lynn Swain

Lynn Swain, a 7th Generation Spiritual Reader, Medium, Healer, Tarot and Crystal Reader, has practiced her craft for over 45 years. With contagious positive energy, Lynn shares her gifts, helping visitors live their lives to the fullest, through individual sessions as well as group events from her Perry Street shop Bull City Magic. Lynn will conduct private 10 minute tarot readings in the Vault at 21C during the Silent Auction.

Ray N. Fredrick, Jr.

Coach Fredrick is internationally recognized for presenting innovative jump rope techniques at camps, workshops, and conventions worldwide. He received the highest award for service in NC, The Order of the Long Leaf Pine. He and the championship-winning Bouncing Bulldogs have been featured in the Wall Street Journal and on the CBS Evening News. He has coached the Bulldogs for 30 years.

Katrina Dooda

Always finding joy in dance, movement, and music, Katrina, a certified POUND Pro and AFAA certified group fitness instructor, loves Pound. It allows her students to connect with musical rhythm and unleashes their inner rock star! Katrina encourages her classes to get lost in the music, have fun, and laugh with each other.

Terri Clark

A certified group fitness instructor and personal trainer, Terri has been a fitness enthusiast for most of her life. With graduate degrees in Medical Anthropology and Public Health, she spent years researching how health care, personal health choices, and culture intersect. She loves helping people to find joy in making fitness a regular part of their lives.

Dr. Bahby Banks

Dr. Bahby Banks is the visionary behind ENVISION Empowerment Experience™ and the founder and CEO of Pillar Consulting. With 15+ years of public health and capacity building expertise, Dr. Banks’ career has spanned work in the Americas, Africa, Europe, and Australia. Dr. Banks enjoys trying new cuisine, traveling, dancing and karaoke. And of course, vision boarding!

Susan Peich

A proud Durhamite, Susan has been a PiYo Live instructor for over a year. The PiYo format offers the perfect mix of strength, flexibility and power that makes a positive impact for training in endurance sports. Susan participates in on-demand PiYo classes with Park Studios (CA) and is certified in Insanity Live.

Garth Robertson

For over 20 years, Garth has been making music and using sound for self -healing. Song and vibration can do more than excite the nervous system with danceable energy; it can help move energy through the body and alleviate stagnation and blockage and promote physical, mental and spiritual healing.

Karla Johnston-Krase, M.Div, RYT

Karla’s practical and compassionate application of Yoga, Ayurveda, and Energetic Body Processes embodies health as an ever-evolving journey. As a Yoga Teacher, Health Coach, Trauma-Informed Parent, and Access Consciousness Bars® Facilitator, Karla offers practical yet dynamic workshops and private sessions to help people thrive in body, life, and parenting through the organization she created, DiscoverYourCenter, LLC.

Patrick Jeffs, PhD

Addressing chronic stress, burnout and fatigue, Dr. Jeffs helps corporations, organizations and individuals increase capacity, connection and productivity in the workplace. He has worked at the intersection of teaching, research, clinical application and business for 15 years. He and his wife, Kim, founded The Resiliency Solution, a somatic-based group psychotherapy practice in Chapel Hill.

Derek D. Ross

Derek D. Ross has been a licensed Zumba Instructor since 2013, and recently become an AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor in May 2019.
He uses his weekly Zumba classes as a platform to not only help people become healthier versions of themselves, but to unite cultures, promote self-confidence, and raise awareness for causes that impact the community.

Amy Rossi

As founder of Namaste Durham, Amy teaches vinyasa flow, hatha, yin and restorative yoga. Amy shares her Durham home with her husband, three cats, one dog and a turtle that has been missing for three months. Her favorite inversion is the keg stand, and she firmly believes bad people make the best yogis.

Amanda Fontaine

As “Chief FUN Officer” at Empower Personalized Fitness in Durham, Amanda specializes in incorporating FUN workouts and games for her clients. She believes adults need to incorporate more play in their fitness activities in order to enjoy them. She received her Master’s in Sports & Exercise Science-Applied Exercise Physiology and is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist.

Lucy Hayhurst is a Licensed and Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist and co-owner of Well Balanced Nutrition, where we help you worry less, love what you eat, and live your best life. One wellness adventure at a time!
Lucy combines her enthusiasm for fitness and playing in nature with her love for nutritious food and the result is a fun and interactive adventure for her clients.

TK King & Coach Rob Foster

A certified personal trainer, USA Boxing certified coach and IKF Kickboxing promoter, TK’s Muay Thai journey started with formal training in Thailand. Even with a Computer Science Degree, extensive computer experience and an MBA, TK’s passion for sports could not be denied. She lettered in 4 sports in high school and played college basketball. She is an inductee in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County and Bishop McGuinness HS Sports Hall of Fame.

Julia Wuench

Julia Wuench is the Founder of The Authenticity Guide, a career coaching firm based in Durham. She is a soft-skills expert, and a believer in the power of authenticity as a tool for greater joy and fulfillment in work and life. Julia holds an MBA from Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business.
